Local History of Lawn Bowling Lawn bowling in Salmon Arm dates from the 1920's down on the Shuswap Lake foreshore. The club was established at it's current location, next to the curling rink and Okanagan College bus stop, in the 1970's, with our clubhouse having been constructed in 1987. We have a lovely 8-rink bowling green and the clubhouse can accommodate about 50 people, with a kitchen available to support food and refreshment service thereto. Also, 16 sets of club bowls are on hand for visiting and/or new bowlers. What is the power of membership? Simply...economy. For an annual membership fee of only $135, members can enjoy a full season of lawn bowling! Included are bowling privileges at most clubs under the Bowls BC umbrella as well. A friendly 'battle' underway! Question: What is the world's only game where the balls roll crooked on purpose?! Answer: It's Lawn Bowls, of course! Why? Well, the bowls aren't spherical (that's why we call them BOWLS, not balls.) They have a precision bias to their construction and this is one of the reasons this old game is so fascinating. Lawn bowls has now evolved into an international sport, but learning the basics is fairly easy. Indeed, many have dedicated their lives to learning the game's intricacies and competing in tournaments around the world. Benefits of lawn bowling are many. Lawn bowling is good exercise which promotes muscle tone, flexibility, and balance. Of course, being in the fresh air and sunshine is also healthful, all in a social atmosphere of friendly competition. Lawn bowls can be very rewarding with a sense of accomplishment for those that master the skills of the various shots and game strategies. Note that lawn bowling really is not an old person's game as is popularly believed. Many older people can obviously play it, however, to compete at the top levels requires skill and energy that the young seem most able to muster. Want to get started? Contact any member of our executive committee to get more information and discover how you can start playing this great, fun game of lawn bowls.
